Lower Amazon Technical Meeting

MRAG was invited to participate in the main legislative review committee and was actively involved in the restructuring of
the policy and legislative framework for the Amazon Basin.  MRAG was able to provide the technical and institutional framework for prioritisation of objectives for the laws to address and provided continuing advice of fisheries and socio-economic consequences of various options.  The review and resulting legislative and institutional framework was finalised by agreement between the states and incorporated into a consultative document.  Some of the more important and urgent actions such as measures to conserve target species known to be in decline, and actions in support of community management schemes were
implemented early by means of decree or convenios.  The consultative document was sent for consideration by all interested parties. The overall intention was to provide a more integrated approval to the management of the Amazon
 Basin.
