Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) for British Indian Ocean Territories (BIOT)

On behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) MRAG has aided in the implementation and the subsequent management of an INMARSAT-C based vessel monitoring system for the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). The system required the coordination of several flag states to submit VMS data for all the licensed fishing vessels entering BIOT to the master control centre based in London.  The MRAG Senior Fisheries Protection Officer in BIOT utilised the VMS data received on his remote access node onboard the Fisheries Protection Vessel to plan and implement the vessels Monitoring Control and Surveillance strategy.
