MRAG has provided training, provision and management of UK international scientific observers for placement on the Norwegian fishing vessels Saga Sea and Antarctic Sea, owned and operated by Aker BioMarine Antarctic AS since 2006. MRAG supervises all observer activities, including routine collection of observer data and other research as agreed between the UK and Norway, and the preparation of scientific observer reports. The observer role is to fulfill the CCAMLR observer requirements and to establish the impact of the fishing technology used by the vessels on the krill and other species and provide reports to CCAMLR which will provide sufficient information for the Scientific Committee to assess the likely impacts of the fishing technology used. Over 50 deployments (varying in length between one month and five months) have been successfully completed between 2006 and 2016.
