This study was implemented in response to a request following a spill from an oil tanker and the subsequent civil action claims being made by fishers in the Angra Dos Reis region. The objectives of the study were to:

  1. Determine to what extent reliable data are collected by and available from the fisheries associations, local industry-funded monitoring initiatives or the Fisheries Ministry; and
  2. Estimate potential overall scale of any damages caused to fisheries and aquaculture sectors by the oil spill, as well as other pressures to fisheries in the region.
