The Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) project aims at supporting Kenya in its efforts to leverage emerging opportunities in the Blue Economy. Its overall goal is to improve management of priority fisheries and mariculture and increase access to complementary livelihood activities in coastal communities. The overall aim of this project is to provide technical support to the KEMFSED project, State Department for Fisheries Aquaculture and the Blue Economy (SDFABE), Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS) and County Government fisheries authorities in the establishment and development of joint co-management areas (JCMAs).Together with research partners, MRAG is developing the JCMA plan for Kenya’s nearshore waters of Malindi-Ungwana Bay, Target Number 2 Tana Kilifi. Key activities being undertaken include stakeholder consultation, background literature review of all relevant documentation, fisheries situation analysis, fishing patterns survey, determination of boundaries of proposed JCMA, establishment of the JCMA, management plan preparation and implementation support.
