Total aggregated estimations of wrasse landings (tonnes) within UK Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between 2012 and 2022, averaged per ICES area (source: MMO, 2024).

This project was a combination of an evidence review and an overview of management effectiveness on behalf of the Marine Management Organisation in order to support the future development of Fisheries Management Plans as required by the UK Joint Fisheries Statement and the overarching Fisheries Act 2020 for the following species groups: 

  • Black seabream (Spondyliosoma cantharus) and gilthead bream (Sparus aurata).
  • Wrasse Complex: Ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta), corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops), Goldsinny (Ctenolabrus rupestris), rock cook (Centrolabrus exoletus) and Cuckoo wrasse (Labrus mixtus)

Robust evidence was gathered to fully understand the biological and ecological characteristics of species, identify any concerns regarding the sustainability of respective fisheries. Management implemented in the UK and further afield were reviewed for their alignment with the objectives of the Joint Fisheries Statement, and the scope to apply such methods within the current operation of the English system in order to provide recommendations for potential inclusion with future management plan development and the evidence base required to support them.
